IHP successfully organizes first online summer school
Lively interest in the virtual event format
The current international travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic also presented the organizers of the annual summer school at the Leibniz Institute – Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics (IHP) with a particular challenge. In previous years, students, doctoral candidates and project partners from various countries had the opportunity to take part in the event organized by the IHP on site to gain an insight into the institute’s current research activities and to exchange ideas with international colleagues.
In order to hold the event despite the current circumstances, it was decided this year to switch to a virtual event format at short notice. The summer school was supported by the EU projects ELICSIR and SpaceRegion. The latter is an INTERREG project, which aims at cooperation between EU member states and neighboring non-EU countries.
On both days (August 26, 2020 and September 9, 2020) the event on this year’s topic: „Radiation Effects in Electronic Circuits and Systems“ was broadcast via the Internet. 33 participants each, primarily project partners from the University of Niš (Serbia), the Tyndall National Institute (Ireland), the University of Granada (Spain) and the Space Research Center (Poland) followed the online event with interest on both days. While the first day was devoted to the topic of „Radiation-hard design methods“, day 2 focused on the topic of „Radiation dosimetry“.
The organizers at this year’s summer school are very satisfied with the lively participation and draw a consistently positive conclusion. “We were very surprised by the great interest in the event and the large number of participants. This showed us what great potential there is in online events. In the future we would like to make a virtual offer available to interested parties in order to be able to cover the growing need for research exchange ”, says Prof. Milos Krstic, one of the scientific directors of the summer school.
