Max Planck Institute Magdeburg launches Ernst Dieter Gilles Postdoctoral Fellowship
Springboard to a Career in the Engineering Sciences after a PhD
The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg launches the Ernst Dieter Gilles Postdoctoral Fellowship, a two-year postdoctoral grant for gifted young researchers in the engineering sciences. The grant was named after the founding director Ernst Dieter Gilles who died in 2019.
The post-doc stage of young researchers, when they are specializing in their subject area, is decisive for their future career. They have to gain scientific experience to qualify for next level positions.
The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg offers from 2020 on a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to gifted young scientists and researchers after their doctorate. It will be offered every two years. The focus will be on applications from candidates in the early stage of their career who plan to develop and implement an independent research project. Thus, the young scientists will be advancing science in their specialist fields and will qualify themselves for a professional life in research or industry.
Selected candidates will be assigned to one of the four directors of the MPI and will receive their offer directly from one of the four scientific departments covering a wide range of research opportunities in the fields of chemical process engineering, bioprocess engineering, energy systems engineering, process systems engineering, systems and synthetic biology, systems theory, and control engineering.
The new grant was named Ernst Dieter Gilles Fellowship in honor of the achievements of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Dieter Gilles, who was the founding director of the institute and had passed away in 2019. Prof. Gilles shaped several generations of graduates and postgraduates who have gone on to have excellent careers in academia and industry. An essential characteristic and merit of his scientific work was advancing the state of the art in methods in the domain of systems and control theory and then applying these new techniques to actual problems in engineering and natural sciences.
Grant and travel allowances are dependent on personal profile and the research project of the scholarship holders and are given for a maximum of 24 months. The scholarship holders may use the facilities of child care and the gender equality office during their stay at the Max Planck Institute. They will also benefit from a wide career management network within the Max Planck Society.
Application deadline for the first round is on March 31, 2020.
